"Hold Your Head Up"

According to Jim Rodford's Sideman (p. 186), fifty years ago to-day (13 April 1975), Argent performed a concert at the Roundhouse London.  "The titles of the album tracks [on Circus] relate to various circus acts, and we rehearsed the whole album with these acts devising their routines around us."

Last year, the Reelin' in the Years archive posted a video of Argent performing "Hold Your Head Up," and while the date given is 1974, I think it's actually from this 1975 concert that Rodford details.  There are a number of circus acts around the band, and it seems unlikely that there would be a second occurrence of such an extravagant show.

Argent's Keyboard Rig

Years ago, I found this picture from an Argent concert:

[source]

The caption reads, "Keyboard player Rod Argent from Argent performs live on stage at the London Music Festival at Alexandra Palace Festival in London on 27th July 1973."

27 July 1973 was fifty years ago to-day, and I'm sharing this picture not only because it's the anniversary but also because it's the earliest evidence I've seen of Rod Argent's keyboard rig at its peak.  On the left, there are a Mellotron M-400 and a Minimoog Model D, and on the right there are a Hammond organ and what is apparently a Hohner Pianet N.

Argent mentions the Hammond C-3 in this video, but I don't know if that's the specific model in this picture.

I suspect that the picture shows Argent playing "I Am the Dance of Ages."  The two live versions I have of the song (at the Palace Theatre on 7 November 1973 and on Encore from 1974) both feature simultaneous Mellotron and Hammond parts.

Argent Live at the Paris Theatre

According to Russo's Collector's Guide, fifty years ago to-day (14 December 1972), Argent performed at the Paris Theatre.  Earlier this year, I found a complete recording of the concert.  The date given at the link is 6 January 1973, but the set list matches what Russo details.  Maybe 6 January 1973 was the date the recording was broadcast.

Here's the set list:
  • "Be My Lover, Be My Friend"
  • "Sweet Mary"
  • "Tragedy"
  • "I Am the Dance of Ages"
  • "The Fakir"
  • "Hold Your Head Up"
  • "He's a Dynamo"
